SHCS, or what most students know as: the health place across the street, stands for Student Health and Counseling Services. Many students here at CSUSM have utilized the medical services offered at SHCS, but most have not taken advantage of the counseling services available. "I've never heard anything about the counseling services available to us at SHCS. I've been there to get some shots taken care of, but that's it" said Mini Contreras.
With student health fees totaling $90 per semester, most Cougars are using only half of the services available to them. Sometimes personal problems such as "anxiety, depression, loss, financial problems, or relationships" mixed in with the stress that comes with school can be too much for one person to handle. According to the SHCS website, "Our goal is to provide a supportive, confidential setting in which these concerns can be addressed." Counseling is available to all students at no charge, other than the initial health fees paid before the semester.
If you fall under any of the fields above, why not step outside of your comfort zone and visit SHCS? It could not only help you out with personal issues, but it could ultimately help you with academic success. "With school comes a lot of academic related stress. After hearing about the psychological services provided, I might consider paying SHCS a visit to help me out with the stress" said student Tramon Jackson.
"Students may be seen for up to eight sessions per academic year, including the Counseling Assessment session. Sessions are usually held weekly and are 50 minutes in length. Groups may be longer-term, and are usually 90 minutes in length," according to the SHCS's website. There are also programs available to students offered at SHCS, to promote being and staying healthy including: workshops, guest lectures, an internship program and more.
If you're feeling overwhelmed by the combination of school and personal conflicts, don't be afraid to schedule an appointment via phone or website. SHCS welcomes anyone Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.
