Derren Raser "Streets of London"
This 20-something is a lyricist beyond his time. The purity of his voice needs nothing but subtle harmonies to compliment this piano-driven piece of poetic genius. The ballad tells a brilliant story, constructed in the classic style of yesteryear's masters. Raser's honesty and talent has to make him one of San Diego's best-kept secrets.

Simeon Flick "Money Don't Make the Man"
He's a homespun morsel of Memphis dressed up in LA's leather jacket. With a fat, jazz-inspired bass line, infectious beat, and intelligent lyrics, the track provokes thought in its audience, a quality rather hard to come by these days. Flick is Indie folk-rock at its finest: the kind of stuff that's just good for the soul.

Jane Lui "Firefly"
Captivating upon the first delicately strummed chord, this emotive acoustic number is as refreshing as it is beautiful. Lui's breathy, yet powerfully lonely voice soars through the most effortless of melodies, with only the occasional tap of her guitar's strings to hold the rhythm together.

Matt Haeck "Comfort in the Dust"
Starting immediately with an easily identifiable double bass, this moody track builds to an epiphany of a conclusion. The orchestral song thrives on minor chords and metaphors, while his commanding, baritone voice never wanes. Haeck flies well under the radar, so keep your eyes peeled for his April 2008 release.

Writer "Don't Wake the Sun"
The rhythm of Writer's latest track grabs you before there's even a chance to ask why. Though simple, the carefully crafted lyrics along with a gripping guitar riff produce a natural combination that is nowhere near pretentious. This pop-punk splash of sound will definitely satisfy any cravings for something catchy.

The Modlins "Why Did it Take so Long"
Anyone can relate to this short, and definitely sweet, pop ditty. The mood screams summertime. Light and airy lyrics make for some serious easy listening, while the 60s era guitar and drumming style bring it all back to ground level. This is the kind of song you'll have in your head for days (not that it's a bad thing, right?).

LOL. Your article reminded me of the movie "Wayne's World" when Wayne and Cassandra are in the car singing "Hey Mickie" by Toni Basil. Then they go on to discuss the annoyance of the last song you hear in your car sticking in your head for the whole day. (Continued…)
