Originally scheduled for UCLA, the Cougars Track and Field team decided to take their first meet of the spring season to the San Diego City Championships instead. It was reported that the schedule change was made for reasons pertaining to the cost.
Nevertheless, the men and women of CSUSM made an incredibly strong showing at their spring season debut. Competing against U.C. San Diego, San Diego State, and Point Loma, the athletes pulled off extremely decisive victories in some events and made a very strong showing in others.
Senior, Billy Walker, gave perhaps the strongest performance of the day, winning both the men's 100-meter and 200-meter dash with times of 11.15 and 22.58, respectively. Walker was also a part of the winning 100-meter relay team which consisted of Thomas McDougal, Austin Sylvia, and Adam Leidigh.
The men's 4x400 team also won decisively. Cory Dart, Nick Stein, Kevin Ott Wright, and Thomas McDougal combined for an overall time of 3:20.80 to take the event hands down.
The women proved to dominate as well. In the 3,000 meter run, the standings were over-run by an all-CSUSM podium with the women taking the top four places in the event. Leading the pack was Dallon Williams who finished with a time of 10:19.36. Also on the women's side, Samantha Showns ran a time of 57.50 to place second in the 400-meter dash.
Coming off injury to make his season debut was freshman runner, Sid Robinson, finishing with a time of 51.80 in the men's 400-meter dash. When asked what he expects out of the season after such a powerful start, Sid responded, "I'm pretty excited. We've got a really solid and deep squad this year. I'm just really excited to see how everyone progresses".
The Cougar's next meet is scheduled for Friday at the Occidental Distance Classic.
